It didn’t take my long to realize that there are a few important things to keep in mind when buying an ab belt toning device. These are:

You adhere the gel pads to your skin, strap on the belt with the easy-fit Velcro, and you are getting an abs workout. It is as easy as that.

What I didn’t like was having to get 3 AA batteries. I know, that is nitpicking, but that really is the only negative. And once in, they last forever! Also, the instructions seem to be written by a 5 year old. They are horrible. But it is as easy to use as I said. I will tell you however, I used it while slouching on the couch when I first got it, and after a couple of days, my back started hurting a little. When I re-read the instructions, it did say to use good posture, so that was my fault.

Out of all the ab belts I have tried, the Slendertone Flex Pro is as sturdy as any others. It just feels solid and sturdy, and there are no wires or remote controls. Everything is right there. Put it on, turn it on, and go. You will like the easy to read LCD audio and video display, and the whole unit is really good quality construction.

The 99 intensity levels are really good for versatility, especially if you are sharing this belt with someone. And the 7 built-in workouts are nice too, they change up your routine, and keep your muscles “confused.” If you are unaware of the terminology, it is good to do different workouts, or the same workouts in a different order, because it keeps your muscles working harder. They can develop a muscle memory if you just grind out the same workout, and won’t grow to their strongest. 7 different programmed workouts is a good feature.

The Contour Ab Belt works by send electronic impulses from a battery pack to sensor pads that contract and release your muscles for you. You can work out while you are reading, doing housework, at work, wherever. Unlike most ab belts, there is a bit of assembly required, though it is pretty simple. You have to move the belt clip off of the muscle stimulator pack to place the 4 AAA batteries (they are included), and that is sort of a pain, but once you do it a couple of times, it is no big deal, and the batteries last forever.

Also, you have to pull adhesive off the back of the gel pads on this belt, and place them on the belt in the outlined areas. The pads last about 30 or 40 sessions, and then you simply pull them off and replace them. This medical grade gel keeps your skin moist, and makes a good connection with the electrodes. You then have to lace the muscle stimulator to the belt. It takes about 5 minutes to assemble the pack, but it isn’t rocket science. If you want an out of the box, slap in your batteries and go ab stimulator, this is not the one for you, but honestly, it is super simple.

The strapping on the belt is smaller on the sides of your waist, and I liked that. Some ab belts are really wide there and they don’t need to be. Also, the Contour Ab Belt will not really burn fat, but will definitely tone your abs. It targets your upper, lower and obliques all at once, but there is just off and on, there are not multiple intensity levels to choose from. Also, the quality of the belt and pads was not that sturdy. I am sure it will be fine, but I was hoping for a more rugged, heavier feeling unit. The up side there is that it is not heavy when you wear it.

The enclosed 4 AAA batteries last a long time, and the only real negative I see is paying $28 or so every 30 to 40 workouts, which is about every 30 or 40 days, for replacement pads. But then again, you have to do this for most belts. Other than that, it works as described, and will firm and tone your abs. I’d recommend the Flex Belt over the Contour Ab Belt but it’s certainly worth trying risk-free at only $14.95.

The Abtronic X2 Abdominal Slimming and Toning Belt uses electronic muscle stimulation to shape your abdominals, but can also be used to firm and tone your chest, or even your legs and arms with the mini belt for your calves, thighs and biceps. The way it works is through electro-stimulation. You strap on the wide belt looking device that has a control pad and display monitor on the front. It comes with an Ab Toning gel, but the amount that comes with the kit is just to get you started. Make sure you order some when you order the belt, or you’ll have to wait like I did for more.

You rub the gel on to make a better contact from the 4 adjustable electronic sensor pads on the front and back to your muscles, and it also keeps your skin from drying out while you use the belt. Also, the 4 pads let you target two muscle groups at once, the front and back, so twice the workout. You then simply select the intensity level and the belt contracts and expands your muscles for you.

The Abtronic X2 belt was invented by physiotherapists for use by people who had accidents and were bed-bound and could not flex their own muscles. It worked so well keeping their muscles toned and fit that they released it as a fitness product. I found that it works as advertised, but that you shouldn’t expect a lot at first. If you are not already in great shape, like me, it will take a week or so before you can handle anything above level 4 intensity. That’s okay, because you can’t go from lifting no weight to lifting 200 pounds, you have to build up, and that is what you do with the Abtronic X2.

It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which is nice because you don’t have any wires you have to worry about, but it uses them pretty quickly, so keep some on hand. I did not know what to expect and thought it would be noisy, but it makes no noise, and doesn’t shake or vibrate. I really like that they included a diet plan as well. There are 10 intensity levels, and 8 different body workouts, so 80 different workouts in all.

Pretty nice feature is the flip button that flips the display upside down so you can look down and read it as you wear the belt. It is sturdy, and has Velcro for tightening, so you can get the right fit every time, but it isn’t so heavy that it wears you down. I can actually put a shirt over it and go anywhere without it being too noticeable. You get a carry bag, the ab belt, smaller arm and leg belt, 4 removable muscle contracting pads, a diet plan and instruction book.

Conclusion

Bad Buy: The Abtronic X2 is an OK unit for the money, and an upgrade from their previous model. I would recommend it if you are on a budget and want more power than the SportElec. There are much better models out there such as the Slendertone Flex Pro. Also, customer service is practically non-existent.
